Paint Surface Gloss Meter

The paint gloss meter measures the ratio of the specularly reflected light intensity from the sample surface to the reflectance of a standard plate by illuminating the sample at a fixed angle with a light source. It is used to quantify the glossiness of surfaces such as coatings and plastics, and to assess the consistency of product appearance in quality inspection.
Selection
When selecting, consider that the measurement angle range should match the gloss level of the sample: use a 20° angle for high gloss, 60° for standard gloss, and 85° for low gloss. Ensure the instrument complies with standards such as ISO 2813, that the calibration plate is in good condition, and that the probe material is wear-resistant and suitable for curved surface measurements.

Application of Gloss Meter in Gloss Measurement of Varnish Coatings
A gloss meter is used to measure the gloss of varnish coatings by detecting surface-reflected light to quantitatively assess the appearance of the coating. The measurement is based on the principle of specular reflection of light, commonly employing angles such as 20°, 60°, and 85° to correspond to different gloss ranges, and follows standard formulas for calculation.

The use of a gloss meter in evaluating the surface gloss of printing paper and art paper.
Gloss meters quantify paper gloss by measuring surface reflected light, with 20°, 60°, and 85° angles commonly used for high, medium, and low gloss surfaces, respectively. The gloss characteristics of printing paper and art paper differ, so the appropriate measurement angle should be selected based on the estimated gloss level.
Determination of specular gloss: Selection criteria for instruments at different angles (20°/60°/85°)
Specular gloss is a measure of a material's ability to reflect light, calculated by comparing the reflected luminous flux of a sample with that of a standard plate. Three angles—20°, 60°, and 85°—are commonly used for measurement, corresponding to high-gloss, medium-gloss, and low-gloss surfaces, respectively.
