Desktop Small-Aperture GlossMeter

The desktop small-aperture gloss meter measures the ratio of the specularly reflected light intensity from the sample surface to the reflectance of a standard black glass by illuminating the surface with a 60° beam. It is used for detecting the surface gloss of materials such as coatings and plastics, and complies with the ASTM D523 standard.
Selection
When selecting, consider matching the measurement angle to the sample's gloss range, ensuring small apertures are suitable for curved surfaces or small-sized samples. Check the instrument calibration certificate and repeatability metrics, and confirm the measurement aperture size and material durability.

Gloss meter measures the surface brightness of packaging film.
This article introduces the principle and method of using a gloss meter to measure the surface glossiness of packaging films. The gloss meter quantifies the specular reflection capability of a surface in gloss units by measuring the ratio of reflected light from the sample to that from a standard plate.
Gloss meter measures the gloss consistency of resin coating film surfaces.
This article introduces how to use a gloss meter to measure the gloss consistency of resin coating film surfaces.
Key steps for measuring the efflux time of varnish using a viscosity cup method
This article introduces the method for measuring the outflow time of varnish using a viscosity cup. The principle is based on Poiseuille's law, where viscosity is estimated by recording the time it takes for the liquid to completely flow out from the small hole at the bottom of the cup—longer times typically indicate higher viscosity.
Application of Gloss Meter in Gloss Measurement of Varnish Coatings
A gloss meter is used to measure the gloss of varnish coatings by detecting surface-reflected light to quantitatively assess the appearance of the coating. The measurement is based on the principle of specular reflection of light, commonly employing angles such as 20°, 60°, and 85° to correspond to different gloss ranges, and follows standard formulas for calculation.
Glossmeter 75-degree angle measurement for paper gloss
This article introduces the principle and method of measuring paper gloss using a 75-degree specular gloss meter. Gloss is defined as the ratio of the light reflected from the paper surface to that reflected from a standard reference plate, with the 75-degree angle commonly used for measuring medium to high gloss papers.
Haze meter detects haze on high-gloss coating surfaces
Haze is the phenomenon where a high-gloss coating surface causes a blurring of reflected images due to light scattering, which reduces visual clarity. A haze meter quantifies the haze value by measuring the intensity ratio between the specularly reflected light and the scattered light at specific small angles. The lower the value, the clearer the surface.
Three-angle gloss meter for evaluating coatings with different gloss levels
Glossiness is a key indicator for evaluating the optical properties of a surface, defined as the ratio of the reflected luminous flux to the incident luminous flux, typically expressed as a percentage or in gloss units.
Method for measuring the gloss of ink surfaces using a gloss meter
This article introduces the method of measuring the surface gloss of ink using a gloss meter. Gloss is a key indicator of the visual quality of ink, and the instrument quantifies gloss by measuring reflected light at specific angles.
The use of a gloss meter in evaluating the surface gloss of printing paper and art paper.
Gloss meters quantify paper gloss by measuring surface reflected light, with 20°, 60°, and 85° angles commonly used for high, medium, and low gloss surfaces, respectively. The gloss characteristics of printing paper and art paper differ, so the appropriate measurement angle should be selected based on the estimated gloss level.
Determination of specular gloss: Selection criteria for instruments at different angles (20°/60°/85°)
Specular gloss is a measure of a material's ability to reflect light, calculated by comparing the reflected luminous flux of a sample with that of a standard plate. Three angles—20°, 60°, and 85°—are commonly used for measurement, corresponding to high-gloss, medium-gloss, and low-gloss surfaces, respectively.
