Overview
LENETA WC-30 Mayer Rods, also known as Wire-wound drawdown bar coating applicator or Mayer Rod, is a laboratory tool for preparing coatings to specific Film thickness films. Its design length is 305 mm and Spreader width is 254 mm, which is sufficient for most standard size baseplates and cardboard needs.
Features
A wide range of wire diameters, covering 0.064 to 1.9 mm (2.5 to 75 mil), can be prepared 4.5 to 150 micron (0.18 to 6 mil) Film thickness film.
The width of the Spreader is 254 mm (10 inches), the total length of the rod body is 305 mm (12 inches), and there are 25 mm hand-held parts at both ends, which is easy to operate.
3. The rod body diameter is 12.7 mm (1/2 inch), providing good rigidity and ensuring Spreader stability.
4. Made of all stainless steel, corrosion resistant, suitable for water-based paints, and nonmagnetic design, can be used with steel plates on magnetic cards.
Principle
The Mayer Rods form a specific gap through a tightly wound wire on its surface. When the rod rolls uniformly on the substrate coated with the sample, the excess paint is scraped off by the wire, leaving on the substrate a wet-film of uniform film thickness corresponding to the wire diameter (i.e. wire diameter).
Applications
Coating R & D and testing, inks performance evaluation, Adhesive film formation, laboratory sample prepative, quality control and comparison
Standards
The data did not mention specific compliance criteria.
Steps
1. Apply the coating to be tested evenly on one end of the substrate.
2. Place Mayer Rods perpendicular to the long side of the substrate and ensure that it completely covers the paint area.
3. At a uniform and stable speed and appropriate pressure, pull the coating applicator in one direction to roll it over the coating area.
4. Lift the coating applicator and check whether the wet-film formed on the substrate is uniform and complete.
Notice
• Make sure Mayer Rods is clean, drying and free of previous paint residue before operation.
When pulling the coating applicator, keep the speed and pressure constant to avoid pause in the middle to ensure uniform film Film thickness.
• After use, the coating applicator should be thoroughly cleaned with a suitable solvent immediately to prevent the coating curing from clogging the gap between the lines.
• Select the appropriate wire diameter model according to the target wet film thickness (e.g. WC-30 corresponds to 0.76 mm wire diameter and about 55 micron wet film thickness).
• Avoid using hard objects to scratch the winding on the surface of the coating applicator to prevent damage from affecting the Spreader accuracy.
