Principle

Based on standard design principles, the DIN cup assesses liquid viscosity by measuring the time it takes for a 100ml sample in the cup to completely flow out of the bottom 8mm aperture. The outflow time is proportional to the liquid viscosity. The longer the time, the higher the viscosity. This allows for quantitative evaluation of the viscosity of Newtonian or near-Newtonian liquids such as inks and coatings.
