The instrument magnetizes the ferromagnetic workpiece to be tested by placing it in a strong magnetic field or by passing a strong current. If there are defects (such as crazing, folding, inclusions) on or near the surface of the workpiece, the magnetic lines of force will generate a magnetic leakage field at the defect. When magnetic particles with good magnetic conductivity are applied, the magnetic leakage field will absorb magnetic particles and pile up to form visible magnetic marks, showing the location, size, shape and severity of the defect under suitable lighting.

Observe the surface of the workpiece under appropriate lighting (white light or 365nm ultraviolet light) to check for magnetic marks. 8. Record the location, size, and shape of the defect.
