The cone-plate viscometer shears the sample through the gap between a rotating conical rotor and a stationary flat plate. The instrument precisely controls the rotational speed of the rotor (i.e., the shear rate) and measures the torque required to maintain this motion (i.e., the shear stress). Based on the measured relationship between torque and rotational speed, combined with known geometric parameters (cone angle and gap), the absolute viscosity of the sample (such as cP or mPa·s) and other rheological parameters can be calculated.
