The standard provides two methods, where Method A is suitable for routine dropping point determination, while Method B is specifically intended for the determination of the dropping point of petroleum wax and petrolatum during production, but not applicable to blended wax. The core operation involves observing the temperature at which the first drop of the sample falls from a specific apparatus. Based on this standard method, two major categories of testing instruments have been derived in the current market: one is the traditional or semi-automatic dropping point tester compliant with Method A, typically including a water bath heating system, glass test tubes, and precise temperature measurement devices; the other is the fully automatic dropping point tester compliant with Method B, which uses a metal bath for precise temperature control, automatically detects the moment the sample drops via photoelectric or mechanical sensors, and records the temperature, requiring no manual intervention throughout the process.
