The method involves converting the resin acids in gum rosin into volatile methyl esters, which are then separated using a capillary column and analyzed by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (FID). Specific types of gum rosin from particular pine species are identified based on characteristic chromatographic peaks. A fused silica BDS column is recommended for use.
