A laboratory salinity analyzer is an analytical instrument used to accurately measure the content of dissolved salts in a solution or body of water. Its core function is to quantify salinity, which is the total amount of dissolved inorganic salts in a unit mass or volume solution, usually expressed in the form of mass fractions, conductivity, or practical salinity units. This instrument plays an important role in environmental monitoring, marine research, food processing, agricultural irrigation, and industrial process control.
Measurement principle
Laboratory salinity testers are mainly based on the principle of conductivity measurement. The conductivity of a solution is closely related to its ion concentration, and the ions produced by the ionization of dissolved salts in water can conduct current, and the higher the ion concentration, the greater the conductivity. The instrument calculates the salinity value based on known standard relationships (such as international practical salt standards) by measuring the conductivity of the solution under specific conditions, combined with temperature compensation. For some applications, the instrument may also use the refractive index or density method as a supplementary measurement method.
The relationship between conductivity and salinity can be expressed as an empirical function, the core calculation of which involves the conductivity ratio: R = C(S, t, p) / C(35, t, p), where C is the conductivity, S is the practical salinity, t is the temperature, and p is the pressure (for deep-sea measurements). At standard atmospheric pressure and reference temperature, salinity S can be determined by R by a polynomial function.
Measurement method
The routine measurement process consists of two main steps: calibration and sample determination. First, the instrument is calibrated using a standard solution with a known salinity to establish a measurement benchmark and compensate for temperature effects. Subsequently, the sample to be tested is processed to ensure it is homogeneous and free of bubbles, the sensor is immersed in the sample, and the results are recorded after the readings have stabilized. Some instruments support automatic temperature compensation, which can directly report salinity values at reference temperatures. For samples with different salinity ranges, calibration should be carried out with standard solutions in the corresponding range to ensure measurement accuracy.
Influencing factors
The accuracy of the measurement results is influenced by several factors. Temperature is the main factor, and the conductivity of the solution changes significantly with temperature, so precise temperature compensation is required. Air bubbles or suspended particles in the sample can interfere with the sensor response, causing fluctuating readings. Sensor contamination, such as fouling or organic matter adherence, can alter its conductivity and requires regular cleaning and maintenance. In addition, the calibration status of the instrument, the stability of the electrode constant, and the difference between the ionic composition of the sample and the calibration solution can also introduce systematic errors.

In environmental monitoring and oceanography, it is used to evaluate the salinity distribution of seawater, estuaries and inland water bodies, and to study water mixing and circulation. The agricultural field uses it to monitor the salinity of irrigation water and guide the prevention and control of soil salinization. In the food industry, it is used to control the salt content of sauces, marinades and aquatic product processing liquids. Industrial water treatment processes, such as salinity monitoring of cooling circulating water and boiler feedwater, also rely on such instruments. The measurement range should match the salinity interval of the sample to be tested, for example, seawater measurements need to cover the high salinity range. Resolution and accuracy must meet experimental or quality control standards. The temperature compensation range and method affect the applicability in different environments. The instrument operation interface should be clear and the calibration procedure should be simple. The sensor material needs to be corrosion-resistant and the maintenance cost is controllable.
