What is Bulk Density?

Volume of closed pores – The volume occupied by sealed cavities within the material that are not connected to the outside.
Volume of open pores – The volume occupied by cavities within the material that are connected to the outside and can be filled with liquids or gases.
For powdered or granular materials (such as cement, flour, or pharmaceutical powders), the volume in their naturally packed state includes not only the volume of the particles themselves and the internal pores within the particles, but also the interparticle voids between the particles.

How to Measure and Calculate Bulk Density?
Understanding bulk density hinges on mastering its measurement methods, as this directly determines how we obtain that crucial "total volume".

Mass of Material (m): This is typically obtained by drying the sample to a constant weight to eliminate the influence of moisture, and then weighing it using a precision balance.

For Regularly Shaped Solid Materials (e.g., bricks, metal blocks, rock core samples):
Geometric Measurement Method: If the sample has a regular geometric shape (like a cube or cylinder), high-precision calipers or micrometers can be used to measure its external dimensions. The total volume is then calculated using the appropriate geometric formula. The sample is then dried, weighed, and the values are substituted into the formula. This is the most straightforward method.
For Irregularly Shaped Solid Materials (e.g., crushed stone, porous ceramics, sintered ore):
Archimedes' Water Displacement Method: This is a common method used in laboratories.
Step 1: Weigh the mass of the dry sample (m).
Step 2: Seal the open pores on the sample surface. To prevent water from entering the open pores during measurement (which would lead to an underestimation of volume), a thin layer of wax or paraffin is typically applied evenly to the sample surface to seal all openings. Weigh the mass of the wax-coated sample.
Step 3: Measure the volume using water displacement. Immerse the wax-coated sample in a container filled with a liquid of known density. By measuring the volume of liquid displaced or the buoyant force on the sample using a balance, the total volume of the wax-coated sample is determined. Then, subtract the volume of the wax layer (calculated using the mass of the wax and the density of the wax) to obtain the sample's own total volume Vb.

Finally, the volume occupied by the powder in the cylinder, Vb, is recorded and used in the formula.
