Definition

A Dart Impact Tester is an instrument used to evaluate the resistance of materials such as sheets, films, or coatings to dynamic impact under specific conditions. The device releases a dart head of the specified quality to free-fall the specimen from a set height, and determines its impact strength or failure capacity according to the damage of the specimen.

Principle

The test is based on the principle of energy conversion. The potential energy of the dart head in the gravitational field is converted into the kinetic energy of the impact specimen. When the dart head hits the specimen, the energy is absorbed by the specimen, and if the absorbed energy exceeds the material's tolerance limit, the specimen will rupture. By systematically changing the mass of the dart head or the drop height, the impact energy of the specimen with a 50% probability of failure, that is, the impact failure power, can be measured.

The formula for calculating impact energy E is: E = m × g × h. where m is the mass of the dart head, g is the gravitational acceleration, and h is the drop height.

Measurement method

Standard measurement procedures typically follow methods such as ASTM D1709, ISO 7765, and others. First, the specimen is clamped flat on the ring fixture. The dart head with initial mass or height is selected for testing, and the subsequent test parameters are adjusted by step method or statistical method according to whether the specimen is broken. Through a series of tests, the impact energy value that makes the sample break 50% is calculated, which is often reported as an indicator of the impact resistance of the material.

Influencing factors

The test results are influenced by a variety of factors. The characteristics of the material itself, such as thickness, molecular orientation, and plasticizer content, are intrinsic factors. Environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity need to be controlled according to standards. In terms of instrument parameters, the diameter of the dart head, the accuracy of the drop height, the frictional resistance of the release mechanism, and the uniformity of the specimen clamping will affect the data repeatability. During the test, the neutrality of the dart head and the presence of air resistance are also factors to consider.
