Definition

A homogenizer is a mechanical equipment used to crush, disperse, and uniformly mix particles or droplets in materials. It is widely used in sample preparation and processing processes in food, pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology and other fields by applying mechanical force, pressure or shear to achieve a highly uniform state of materials.

Principle

The working principle of the homogenizer is mainly based on the combination of fluid mechanics and mechanical mechanics. Common working principles include high-pressure homogenization, shear homogenization, and ultrasonic homogenization. The high-pressure homogenizer pushes the material into a narrow homogenization valve through a high-pressure pump, producing cavitation, shear and impact effects under high-speed flow and instantaneous pressure release, causing the particles to break. The shear homogenizer uses a rotor and stator rotating at high speed to generate strong shear force and achieve dispersion. The ultrasonic homogenizer forms cavitation bubbles in the liquid through high-frequency vibration, and generates local high pressure and microjet when it ruptures to achieve the crushing effect. Measurement method

The evaluation of homogenization often relies on quantitative analysis of material uniformity and particle distribution. Common measurement methods include laser particle size analysis, which determines particle size distribution through the principle of diffraction or scattering; Microscopic observation to directly visualize particle morphology and dispersion state; Viscosity measurement, which indirectly reflects the degree of mixing uniformity; and stability tests, such as centrifugal sedimentation or turbidity measurements, to evaluate the long-term stability of the system after homogenization. These methods need to be operated according to relevant industry standards (e.g., ISO 13320, GB/T 19077) to ensure comparability and accuracy of results.

Factors affecting homogenization

The homogenization effect is affected by multiple factors. In terms of material characteristics, including initial particle size, concentration, viscosity and phase interface properties, materials with high viscosity or high solids content usually require higher energy input. Equipment parameters such as pressure, shear rate, processing time and cycle times directly determine the energy transfer efficiency. The design of the homogenizing valve or rotor-stator clearance can also affect the shear strength. Operating conditions such as temperature control should be noted that some materials may denature or degrade due to overheating. In addition, the feed speed and pre-treatment steps in the process (e.g. pre-mixing) also play a role in the final homogenization result.

Homogenizers play a pivotal role in several industries. In the food industry, it is used for the emulsification and stabilization of dairy products, juices, and sauces to improve taste and shelf life. The pharmaceutical sector involves the preparation of vaccines, liposomes, and injections, ensuring uniform distribution of drug particles. The cosmetics industry uses homogenization to achieve the delicate texture of creams and lotions. It is used in biotechnology for cell disruption, tissue homogenization to extract intracellular substances. The chemical industry is used in nanomaterial dispersion, pigment grinding and other processes. Different applications have specific requirements for homogeneous accuracy, hygiene and material compatibility.

Consideration of the selection of homogenizer

When selecting, it is necessary to comprehensively evaluate the technical requirements and operating conditions. First, choose the appropriate working principle and contact material according to the properties of the material (e.g., viscosity, sensitivity, corrosiveness), for example, biological samples may be suitable for mild ultrasonic homogenization, while high-viscosity fluids may require strong shear models. In terms of processing capacity, consider batch size and production rate to determine the size of the equipment. Homogenization accuracy needs to match the target particle size range, and high-pressure homogenizers can usually achieve sub-micron dispersion. Equipment should comply with relevant safety and hygiene standards, such as GMP requirements for the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, energy consumption, ease of maintenance and process scalability are also considerations for long-term use.
