Definition
The Paper Strip Abrasion Tester is a specialized testing equipment used to evaluate the wear resistance of the surface coating, printed or laminated layer of a material. It quantifies the wear resistance of a material surface by simulating its resistance to repeated friction under specific pressures and friction media. This equipment is widely used in quality control and R&D testing in various industrial fields such as printing and packaging, ink coatings, leather textiles, plastics and rubber and consumer electronics shell coatings.
Principle
The working principle of the paper tape abrasion tester is based on reciprocating or rotary friction movement. The test specimen is fixed on a horizontal platform, and the friction head above it wraps the special friction paper tape specified by the standard and presses the specimen surface with constant vertical pressure. The driving mechanism drives the friction head or specimen platform to perform reciprocating linear motion or rotational motion, so that the paper tape and the specimen surface produce relative friction. In each test, the friction stroke, movement speed, applied pressure and number of frictions can be precisely set and controlled according to the standard. The wear resistance level of the material is evaluated by observing the number of friction times when there are wear marks on the surface of the specimen (such as exposed bottom, color change), or evaluating the change in surface state after completing the specified number of times.
Measurement method
The measurement process usually follows a standardized process. First, prepare specimens of specified sizes according to product specifications or test standards (such as ASTM F2357, JIS K5701, GB/T 7706, etc.), and adjust the state under standard temperature and humidity conditions. The specimen is firmly installed on the testing machine platform to ensure that the test surface is flat. A friction tape that meets the standard type and specifications is selected, installed on the friction head and applied to the specified load weight to generate the standard pressure. Set parameters such as friction stroke, speed, and total friction times required for testing. After starting the device, the paper tape is repeatedly rubbed against the specimen surface along a set path. During or after the test, determine whether the surface coating of the specimen is worn to a certain extent (e.g., the number of frictions of the substrate or base color for the first time) or measure the color change value ΔE on the surface before and after friction by means such as visual observation, optical instruments or colorimeters. Abrasion resistance is typically characterized by the number of frictions it tolerates or the rate of change in performance before and after wear.
Influencing factors
The accuracy and repeatability of test results are affected by multiple factors. The characteristics of friction paper tape are one of the key factors, including the material, thickness, surface roughness and batch consistency of the paper tape, and different specifications of paper tape may produce different friction effects. The pressure applied directly determines the intensity of friction, and the stability and accuracy of the pressure are crucial. Parameters of frictional motion, such as stroke length, speed of motion, and mode of motion (reciprocating or rotating), affect the frequency and mode of frictional contact. Environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity can affect the physical properties of the surface of certain materials, indirectly altering wear resistance. The preparation and fixation of the specimen body, such as surface flatness, coating uniformity and clamping stability, can also affect the test results. These factors need to be ensured in compliance with the standard to ensure the comparability of test data.
Applications
Tape abrasion testers are used in a wide range of industries where surface durability needs to be verified. In the printing and packaging industry, it is used to test the adhesion and abrasion resistance of ink layers in color boxes, labels, and film prints. In the coatings and inks industry, it is used to evaluate the wear resistance of different substrates such as spraying, baking paint, and UV coating. The consumer electronics industry often tests the friction resistance of coatings, silk-screen logos, or buttons on the shells of mobile phones, laptops, and other devices. In the leather goods and textile industry, it is used to test the abrasion fastness of leather coatings, fabric printing or transfer patterns. In addition, it is also used as an important reliability testing method in the fields of automotive interiors, plastic products, furniture surface treatment, etc.
Equipment selection considerations
When choosing a suitable paper tape abrasion testing machine, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the testing needs and technical parameters. First of all, the test standards to be followed should be clarified to ensure that the design, function and accuracy of the equipment meet the core requirements of the standard for friction mode, pressure range, stroke, counting capacity and so on. The core mechanical structure of the equipment should ensure smooth operation and uniform and precise frictional pressure application. The control and display system should have the characteristics of convenient parameter setting, accurate operation counting, and high degree of automation. The test space and fixture design of the equipment should be compatible with the common sizes and shapes of the sample to be tested. In addition, the durability of the equipment, ease of maintenance, and the technical support and calibration services provided by the manufacturer are also important considerations. The final selection should be based on a comprehensive evaluation of the test material, standard conformity, and long-term use needs.
