A paint film impactor is a physical test instrument used to evaluate the ability of coatings to resist cracking or peeling under rapidly deforming conditions. It provides quantitative data for the mechanical properties of the coating by simulating the mechanical impact that the paint film may be subjected to in practical applications. Principle
The core principle of paint impactors is based on the law of conservation of energy. The instrument typically contains a vertical conduit with adjustable height, as well as a punch of specified quality. The punch frees down from the set height and strikes the die located below the specimen, causing the specimen to deform instantly. The impact resistance is evaluated by observing whether the paint film is cracked or peeling off, and the maximum impact height or energy value that causes failure is recorded. The impact energy E can be calculated by the formula E = mgh, where m is the punch mass, g is the gravitational acceleration, and h is the impact height.
Measurement method
When measuring, the coating specimen is first securely fixed on the base of the impactor, ensuring that the paint surface is facing the die. Select the appropriate punch quality and starting height according to the test standard (e.g. ISO 6272, ASTM D2794, etc.). Release the punch to allow it to fall freely to impact the specimen, then remove the specimen and inspect the impact area under the specified lighting conditions. The maximum impact height without damage to the paint film is determined by gradually increasing or decreasing the height, or the pass/no-pass determination method is directly adopted. Results are usually reported in centimeters or joules.
Influencing factors
Paint impact test results are influenced by a variety of factors. The properties of the coating itself, such as thickness, hardness, flexibility, and adhesion, are intrinsic factors that determine impact resistance. The type and flatness of the substrate also affect the stress distribution. In terms of test conditions, the shape and size of the punch, impact velocity, and ambient temperature and humidity can all change the test results.
