Portable Zahn Viscosity Cup

The handheld Zahn viscosity cup determines viscosity by measuring the time it takes for fluid to flow out through a standard hole at the bottom of the cup. The fluid outflow time is proportional to the viscosity, making it suitable for on-site rapid viscosity testing of coatings, inks, and other materials. During operation, the cup is immersed in the sample and then lifted, and the drainage time is recorded. The viscosity value is then obtained by referring to a conversion table.
Selection
When selecting, consider matching the cup number to the viscosity range of the fluid being tested. Cup No. 1 is used for low-viscosity fluids such as varnishes, while Cup No. 5 is for high-viscosity fluids like slurries. Choose the aperture specifications according to industry standards, and pay attention to the corrosion resistance of the cup material. The operating temperature should be close to the standard calibration temperature, and conversion tables should be used for different cup numbers.

A handheld viscosity cup is a portable tool used to quickly assess the viscosity of coatings at construction sites. It operates based on the flow-out time method, calculating viscosity by measuring the time it takes for the coating to flow out of the cup's orifice. It is suitable for Newtonian or approximately Newtonian fluids.

Key steps for measuring the efflux time of varnish using a viscosity cup method
This article introduces the method for measuring the outflow time of varnish using a viscosity cup. The principle is based on Poiseuille's law, where viscosity is estimated by recording the time it takes for the liquid to completely flow out from the small hole at the bottom of the cup—longer times typically indicate higher viscosity.
Types and Selection of Paint Viscosity Cups
