Coating Rod for thin films

The coating rod for thin films is a metal cylindrical rod wound with precision steel wires on its surface, utilizing the gaps between the wires to control the transfer amount of the coating. During operation, it rolls on the substrate surface to evenly spread liquid coating into a wet film of specific thickness. It is used in laboratories to simulate the blade coating process and to test the leveling, hiding power, and drying behavior of coatings.
Selection
When selecting, consider the substrate surface roughness and paint viscosity; choose a larger wire diameter for high viscosity. The wire diameter determines the wet film thickness, typically ranging from 10 to 200 μm. Stainless steel offers corrosion resistance, while carbon steel requires chromium plating to prevent rust. The rod length should cover the sample width, with handheld versions suitable for small samples and fixed holders ensuring stable coating application.
