Microbial Spreader Rod

The microbial spreading rod is a sterile rod with threads or grooves on its surface, used to evenly spread liquid samples onto the surface of a solid culture medium by rolling or scraping. Its principle relies on physical contact to disperse microorganisms for growth, making it suitable for colony counting and isolation and purification. It is commonly used in microbial testing of food, medical, and environmental samples.
Selection
When selecting, consider the material of the spreading head: stainless steel is resistant to high temperatures and can be sterilized repeatedly, while plastic is for single use. Choose the groove density based on sample viscosity; use sparse grooves for high-viscosity samples. Match the plate size, with standard 90 mm plates corresponding to bent spreading rods. Validation of sterility and biocompatibility is required.
