GlossMeter

A gloss meter evaluates surface gloss by measuring the specular reflectance of an object's surface under a standard light source. Its principle involves a photoelectric detector receiving the intensity of reflected light at a fixed incident angle, converting the optical signal into an electrical signal, and displaying it in gloss units. Its function is to quantify the surface light reflection characteristics of materials such as coatings, plastics, and paper. Applications include production quality control processes such as gloss inspection of dried paint films, brightness control of printed materials, and surface quality testing of plastic products.
Selection
When selecting a gloss meter, it is important to consider the measurement angle range. A 20° angle is used for high-gloss surfaces, a 60° angle for standard gloss, and an 85° angle for low-gloss surfaces. The measurement aperture should be chosen based on the smoothness of the sample, and special adapters are required for curved samples. Ensure that the instrument complies with industry standards such as ISO 2813 and ASTM D523. The working environment should be dust-proof and vibration-resistant, and regular calibration with a standard calibration plate is necessary to verify accuracy.

Application of Gloss Meter in Gloss Measurement of Varnish Coatings
A gloss meter is used to measure the gloss of varnish coatings by detecting surface-reflected light to quantitatively assess the appearance of the coating. The measurement is based on the principle of specular reflection of light, commonly employing angles such as 20°, 60°, and 85° to correspond to different gloss ranges, and follows standard formulas for calculation.
Glossmeter 75-degree angle measurement for paper gloss
This article introduces the principle and method of measuring paper gloss using a 75-degree specular gloss meter. Gloss is defined as the ratio of the light reflected from the paper surface to that reflected from a standard reference plate, with the 75-degree angle commonly used for measuring medium to high gloss papers.
Haze meter detects haze on high-gloss coating surfaces
Haze is the phenomenon where a high-gloss coating surface causes a blurring of reflected images due to light scattering, which reduces visual clarity. A haze meter quantifies the haze value by measuring the intensity ratio between the specularly reflected light and the scattered light at specific small angles. The lower the value, the clearer the surface.
