Coating Leak Detection

Coating leak detection assesses the continuity of coatings using electrochemical or high-voltage spark methods. The principle is that when voltage is applied, an intact coating acts as an insulator with no current flow, whereas at damaged areas, current pathways or electrical sparks are generated. This method serves to locate defects such as pinholes and cracks that are invisible to the naked eye. It is applied for quality verification of industrial protective coatings, such as those on the inner walls of storage tanks and pipeline anti-corrosion layers.
Selection
When selecting, consider the conductivity of the test object: use the spark method for metal substrates and the wet sponge method for non-metal substrates. Match the detection voltage according to the coating thickness, using low voltage for thin coatings to avoid breakdown. Environmental explosion-proof requirements determine the equipment grade, with intrinsically safe types needed for flammable areas. Detection efficiency needs determine whether to use manual scanning or an automated system.
