Portable ViscoMeter Cup

The hand-held viscosity measuring cup determines viscosity by measuring the time it takes for a fluid to flow out through a standard orifice. It is used for rapid on-site testing of the fluidity of coatings, inks, and other fluids. During operation, the number of seconds required for the fluid to flow from a full cup to the marked line is recorded, and the viscosity value is calculated by combining it with the cup system coefficient.
Selection
When selecting, ensure the measurement range covers the viscosity of the sample. Common models include Ford cups and Zahn cups. Consider matching the orifice size to the fluid characteristics; for high viscosity, choose a larger orifice. The cup material must be resistant to chemical corrosion, with stainless steel suitable for most scenarios. Temperature effects require the use of a constant-temperature device.

Key steps for measuring the efflux time of varnish using a viscosity cup method
This article introduces the method for measuring the outflow time of varnish using a viscosity cup. The principle is based on Poiseuille's law, where viscosity is estimated by recording the time it takes for the liquid to completely flow out from the small hole at the bottom of the cup—longer times typically indicate higher viscosity.
