This standard provides a test method for evaluating the scratch resistance of coatings. It employs a handheld spring-loaded scratch tester, which can be performed using either a pointed stylus (Method A) or a disc stylus (Method B). Both methods are applicable to flat or curved surfaces, with Method A also suitable for specimens as small as 30 mm × 50 mm. The test can be used for a simple "pass/fail" assessment or for graded evaluations. The method is designed to overcome the repeatability issues associated with traditional pencil hardness tests, which arise from variations in pencil materials. By utilizing a standardized spring-loaded pen with precisely controlled pressure (typically equipped with a tungsten carbide tip), it delivers more stable and reliable results.
