ASTM Efflux Cup

The ASTM efflux cup determines viscosity by measuring the time it takes for a fluid to flow out from a standard cup orifice. With a fixed aperture at the bottom of the cup, the number of seconds required for the fluid to completely discharge is recorded. It is used for on-site rapid testing of flow characteristics in industries such as coatings and inks.
Selection
The selection of an ASTM flow cup should match the viscosity range of the material being tested. Common models like DIN 4# are suitable for a range of 30–100 seconds. Consider the corrosion resistance of the cup material; stainless steel is suitable for most solvent-based coatings. Ensure the accuracy of the metering orifice complies with the ASTM D4212 standard. Note the influence of temperature on viscosity, and record the ambient temperature accordingly.
