Brix Meter

A refractometer measures the concentration of soluble solids in liquids based on the principle of light refraction. When light passes through a prism and comes into contact with the sample, it refracts. By calibrating the relationship between the refractive index and sugar concentration, the reading is directly displayed. It is used for monitoring and quality inspection in food processing, such as juices, beverages, sauces, and more.
Selection
When selecting a refractometer, it is essential to clarify the measurement range and accuracy, with a common range of 0–90% Brix. Handheld models are suitable for rapid on-site testing, while benchtop versions offer higher stability. Pay attention to the temperature compensation function, as temperature differences can affect reading accuracy. Consider the compatibility of the sample properties with the prism material—strongly corrosive liquids require a sapphire prism. Ensure the calibration method is simple and can be performed independently.
